Smart Collections are FCP's secret weapon. Set them up once, and they automatically organize your footage forever.

What Are Smart Collections?

Think of Smart Collections like filters or saved searches. You define rules, and FCP automatically populates the collection with matching clips.

The difference between regular collections and Smart Collections:

• Regular Collection: You manually drag clips in
• Smart Collection: FCP automatically adds matching clips

As you tag footage throughout the year, Smart Collections silently organize it in the background. When you need a sunset shot in November, your Sunset collection already has every sunset you've tagged since January.

Creating Your First Smart Collection

Step-by-step:

1. Right-click in your library sidebar
2. Select New Smart Collection
3. Define your rules
4. Click OK

That's it. The collection immediately populates with matching clips and will continue updating automatically.

Now every clip you tag with "Sunset" automatically appears here. Forever.

The Compound Effect

Here's where Smart Collections become genuinely powerful:

Month 1: You tag 5 sunset clips. Your Sunset collection has 5 clips.
Month 6: Your Sunset collection has 40 clips.
Month 12: Your Sunset collection has 80+ clips.

You didn't do any organizing beyond tagging. The collection grew automatically.

When someone asks "Hey, got any sunset footage from the desert?" you click one collection and have dozens of options instantly.

The Year-End Payoff

This is where all the work pays off. When December arrives and you want to create a "Best of 2025" video:

1. Open your "2025 Footage" Smart Collection (shows everything from this year)
2. Filter to 5-star ratings (your portfolio shots)
3. You're looking at your year's best moments in one place
