Ceth has been a licensed Reduction Artist for nine years. She has certified 847 files.
The job is straightforward in principle. AI-generated work arrives flagged for threshold review. She evaluates, identifies the element driving aesthetic impact above the permissible level, removes or attenuates it, certifies the output for release. Without certification, the work cannot be distributed to the public. Most cases take two days. Complex cases take a week. In nine years she has marked seven files non-reducible. Eight after today.
The file has been in her queue for sixteen days. She has opened it eleven times. Each time she takes it up to the threshold measurement and looks for where to cut. The difficulty is that it does not have a seam. Most work she sees has a localized source: a specific frequency in a musical composition, a color value in an image, a particular syntactic pattern in a text. Remove the element. The remainder is often still very good. It is just no longer over the line.
This file has no such location. The impact is distributed. It does not accumulate in any single component she can isolate. She has tried removing structural elements, tonal elements, formal elements. Each time she removes one, the remaining pieces redistribute and the threshold measurement stays the same. The work is doing something she does not have a framework for, which in nine years has happened twice before. Both of those she eventually solved.
She is not accustomed to working on something she cannot reduce. She is aware that this may be what is making her slow. She has opened the file more times than any other in her career and has more notes on it than on any case she has closed, and the notes say the same thing in seventeen different framings.
On the sixteenth day she opens the file for the twelfth time. She runs it from the beginning at full evaluation. She takes notes. The notes are not different.
She holds the pen over the certification form for a moment. Then she checks the non-reducible box. She files it: Not for release. Work archived.
She sends it. The screen clears. The next file in queue shows its header.
She opens it.
