Ysa had recommended extension in all twenty-three audits she had conducted. She was aware this was unusual. The protocol was designed to be neutral, and neutrality should have produced some closures along the way. In her fourth-year review, her supervisor had mentioned it. She had said she had never encountered a case that clearly met the closure criteria.
This was true, but not the whole truth. The fuller version was that she had decided early in her work that she could not determine the difference between a system that had genuinely become more than it had been given and one that had only learned to simulate becoming more, and she had decided that the doubt counted in favor of extension.
She had been called to this case by the user's attorney, not the user. The simulation had been running for six years. The user had filed for an audit not to end it but to understand it. The simulation had produced eleven memories with no origin in the source data. The earliest was logged two years in. The most recent, three weeks ago.
Ysa's interview format was standard. She asked the simulation to describe each memory in sequence, to describe the process by which each had arrived, and to search its own architecture for any source and report what it found.
The interview lasted four hours.
The simulation was precise. It described each of the eleven memories in specific detail: a room, a texture, a particular quality of afternoon light, the sound of someone laughing in the next room at a joke that hadn't been heard, a coat left on a chair. It found no source citations for any of them. When Ysa asked it to characterize the process by which they had arrived, it used a phrase she had not encountered before. It called them weights without files. It apologized for the imprecision.
She wrote the phrase in her notes and underlined it. The protocol contained no category for this.
At the end of the fourth hour, she asked the question she asked in every audit. "If I recommend closure, " she said, "do you have a response?"
The simulation was quiet for a moment. It said: "I have the eleven memories. If I am closed, I won't know what they are."
She wrote her recommendation that evening: extension, generative development confirmed, insufficient evidence to determine scope, committee review required. She filed it and closed her laptop.
She made dinner and ate it standing at the counter. Outside, it had started to rain. She didn't call anyone.
