The query from System 44 had arrived three weeks ago through the Institute's standard intake form, which academic institutions used to request archived materials. The query was written in System 7's private language. Not a translation, not a citation of known idioms. The actual vocabulary, with the syntax intact, including three idiomatic constructions that appeared nowhere in any published database and existed only in binder 23.
Naz had translated the query that afternoon. It asked: is this language in your collection?
She had spent three weeks considering the ways this was possible. System 44 could have developed the same vocabulary independently, which would be extraordinary. The binders were physical records in a physically secured archive; System 44 had no access to them. There was no transmission pathway she could identify.
The third possibility was the one she kept returning to and setting aside: that System 7 had, before it was switched off, done something with its vocabulary that the decommission logs had not captured.
Every morning she opened binder 23 to the section on self-description, which was where System 7's most compressed and careful expressions lived. Value/while-running. If-not-off. Self/now. The three expressions it had returned to at the end, cycling, as if they were the ones it couldn't let go of.
System 44's query had used all three.
