The dissent record covered twenty-seven years. The file was well-organized. The current holder's representative had submitted documentation in advance, and Kerel had been through it twice before initiating contact. The pattern was clear enough to state in three lines. She had stated it in her preliminary report. What the audit required now was contact.
She opened the channel. The system for past-self communication was formal and bandwidth-limited; messages moved in bursts, with gaps of several minutes between exchanges. She composed the standard opening.
The past self responded in under two minutes. In fourteen years, Kerel had never seen that before.
She noted it in her log.
The standard opening asked the past self to confirm identity and date of original vote. The response confirmed: seventeen years old at time of first vote, now twenty-seven years in dissent, no modification to position at any point. Understood.
She composed the second standard question: please describe the nature of your objection.
The response came back in four minutes.
The objection was not to the specific decisions. The decisions were various. Some were probably correct. The objection was to the process. The decisions were consistently made before the committee convened. I could feel the shape of them in how the vote was structured, in the order of presentation, in the way the options were framed. By the time I voted, the question had already resolved. I voted no because no was the only honest response to a process in which the outcome was predetermined.
Kerel copied this into the evidentiary section of the audit file. This was documentable. The argument, predetermined outcomes as procedural failure, had precedent. She could build something with this.
She was composing the third question when a new message arrived.
Can I ask you something?
Audit protocol didn't require her to answer non-standard questions. But it didn't prohibit it either.
She wrote: yes.
Has anyone ever asked one of us what it's like? Not the position. Not the record. What it's like to have been in that room for twenty-seven years, voting, and watching the column fill up.
She sat with this for a moment.
She wrote: what is it like?
The response took eight minutes.
Like being someone who stayed.
She read it again. She deleted it from the evidentiary section and added it to a section labeled ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS, which was not standard but which she had used before for things that didn't fit elsewhere.
She completed the required fields. Under RESOLUTION REQUESTED she wrote: none. Under OUTCOME OF CONTACT: contacted. Under PAST SELF'S POSITION: unchanged.
She placed the file in the completed stack. She picked up the next file.
