The Untransmittable

What if shame was the only emotion that could not be shared between people, even those who loved each other completely?

· · ·
Orin has been watching Tess carry this for three weeks. Orin knows the shame is there and knows they cannot reach it. They keep trying anyway. This is the story of why.

Orin has learned to read the shame in Tess the way you learn to read weather: by the way she holds her shoulders in certain rooms, the pause before she answers questions about that week, what she does with her hands when the memory surfaces. Orin has spent three weeks becoming fluent in these small signs. The fluency has not translated into access. The shame sits in Tess like an object in a sealed container, and Orin can describe the container precisely now and still cannot open it.

They stopped believing they could open it sometime in the first week. The second week was spent on variations: different questions, different timing, longer silences, shorter ones. The third week Orin understood that it was not a matter of technique.

They keep trying because stopping would mean something specific. It would mean accepting that there is a room in Tess they cannot enter, which is true, which has always been true of this particular room, but to stop knocking would be to know that completely. Orin is not ready for that knowledge to be finished. While they are still trying, the knowledge has an edge that has not yet been reached. When they stop, the edge will be there, defined, and they will have to live with its exact shape.

There is also this: the trying is something to do. When Tess is carrying it, Orin can be alongside her, reaching, which is a form of company even when it produces nothing. The alternative is to sit with their own hands in their lap and watch from a distance that cannot be crossed.

Tonight Tess is talking again, steadily, describing the room as though the description might eventually become a door. Orin's hand is on her arm. The shame does not move. Orin watches Tess's face in the lamp light and keeps their hand there anyway.
