April 27, 2026. Move day. Most people are rolling out, headed to whatever's next. Shannon and I are moving to a nearby campsite on a ledge for a couple of nights. The road filters out anyone with a trailer. Looks like a nice spot.
I'm moving slowly this morning. Not looking forward to the packing. Low on supplies now, plenty to eat but out of snacks and first choices for most things.
Yesterday I spent much of the day building a dance music mix tailored to our group. It went over well around the campfire last night. Something in that area is working. I'll keep developing it.
The North Rim backcountry is going to have to wait again. For the third year in a row the timing hasn't lined up. It doesn't open until May 15, I don't have a 4x4 buddy, and there's too much uncertainty around conditions after last year's fire. The path made itself clear.
Shannon and I went on a nearly five mile hike yesterday. I brought Bugsy along and got some great footage. Found a setting that significantly improves the obstacle avoidance. Best drone I've owned.
Top of mind as I pack up: I need a hard drive to get back to video work. Main battery is at 18%. I'll be cooking my last batch of ground beef today or tomorrow. The van needs fuel, 47 gallon tank, nearly empty. If I see $5.29 diesel in Utah I'm calling that a deal. I'll probably make a run into St. George this week for a full resupply. Then Colorado.
Talking around the fire last night it became clear that everybody loved this gathering but everybody is also ready for some quiet. Each person in this group needs their solitude and there was a lot of talk about looking forward to it.
This stay has been good for my practice. I'm getting further into the zone more frequently and for longer stretches. My adventures are largely about setting myself up for those blocks now.
My mind is in two places. Time to pack.
