April 17, 2026. I had bad dreams last night. This rarely happens, and when it does it's usually because I'm too hot. I woke up sweating but also cold, so I didn't want to remove the covers. I don't remember the dream anymore, but it was an unwanted loop. I had enough awareness to know there was no solving it from inside. The only solution was to not re-enter it. Lying there awake I found myself reflecting on why. I'd done a copal cleanse on the van a few hours earlier. That loop of an unpleasant dream exists in a kind of timeless, familiar space. I'm not a fan of visiting there. I did eat a full meal just before bed, so I'm going to chalk it up to that.
Some folks from camp are taking a field trip to a nearby ghost town at 10:30. I have a lot I want to do today but I'll probably go along.
We did the rig tour yesterday. Everyone cleaned up their living spaces and showed them to the group. I love that stuff. It feels like "show me your treehouse fort and I'll show you mine." I learn something from each person. Last night someone showed me an app called Antipodes. You locate any point on the map and it shows you what's on precisely the opposite side of the globe. The middle of the Indian Ocean turns out to be opposite most of the U.S. and Canada, which takes some of the fun out of it. Interesting nonetheless.
I spent a few hours yesterday straightening up for the tour. Now I get to live in it. It's nice in here. I went through my bins, pulled out things I rarely touch, moved them to harder to reach spots. Lean and mean. I love my home.
I woke up early this morning, around 4:30, from that dream. Found myself researching OneWheels. I don't need something else to add to the van payload and it's hard to justify the expense, but I sure love riding that thing. It got its hooks in me a little. I'll give it some time and see if it lets go.
I have another week here. I intend to spend it primarily on video. I've learned a lot and have more to learn. The basics feel solid now. From here it's iteration. Two channels: LAYNG TV for more intentional work, Making the Video for the practice of making. Both appeal to me in different ways. Time to find out what I can do with them.
I also need to make time for music. The gear is about two thirds wired up, which is an achievement in the van. Getting it the rest of the way so it's ready without friction, this is something years in the making. One of the harder problems of van life versus a house.
I'm writing these Roads entries in Typora, a simple markdown editor I've become a little obsessed with. The real experiment is that I write the raw journal entry and then have Claude edit it. I'm aware they come out the other side more polished and a bit more machine-like. I know all the tells. But I appreciate something about what the editing delivers. I haven't landed anywhere on it yet. The strength of these entries is that they add a human and personal touch to the site. When Claude edits them they keep most of that, but with cleaner edges. I'm just going to keep doing it and see how it sits.
Today is sunny in southern Utah. High of 56.
