The Spot

Arizona Strip

May 2026

May 5, 2026. Today is Cinco de Mayo. Yesterday was May the Fourth Be With You Day. The truck camper in the spot I've been coveting is still there. Shannon and I have been hatching mischievous schemes to oust him and get the spot.

Yesterday was essentially a spa day for both computers. Got the music laptop updated to the latest OS, consolidated all video files from various drives onto the new 5TB, wiped the old ones. I now have a dedicated 2TB SSD for active video editing, 500GB for active music, 2TB for archived music, and the 5TB for archived video. The MacBook Pro had a completely full 4TB drive and now has 2.6TB available. Tedious and time consuming but it's done and behind me.

Last night I finally got the DJ gear plugged in and running. The full sized decks, the big mixer. It felt great. I've got most of the major DJ software and they each have different things I like and don't like. I want to be able to run standalone off a thumb drive without a laptop, which means using Rekordbox, which I find stiff and prescriptive. Everything has to be done its way. I'm going to endure it a bit longer for the sake of the standalone capability. Having that gear up and running, I don't mind it taking up the counter space. It's given me an idea for a fold-up counter on the opposite side that tucks away when not needed.

The new food system is working well. Last month I froze meat in 2.5 to 3 pound batches and had trouble defrosting them. This time I went with 1 to 1.5 pound batches. Easy to defrost, one batch per day, as soon as I cook one I transfer the next from freezer to fridge. Working perfectly. I'm not even close to tired of this food.

I'm continuing to enjoy traveling with Shannon. She's

WAIT THE GUY IS MOVING. I GOTTA GO, I'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

Ok, it's about 90 minutes later.

I'm in the spot.

This is wild. Without a doubt one of the most memorable campsites I've been in. I've had a string of those lately but I think this one takes the cake. I just sent the drone up to try to capture it. Truly epic.

Now that the hard drive saga is finally resolved it's full speed ahead on video editing and music. So many things I want to do with this time here. I'll just have to slow down and take them one at a time.

Shannon is still back at the other spot. She and Greg are making monster cookies in his infrared oven. After that she'll make her way over. The road between the two spots is rough. She's walked it several times to strategize, completely undaunted. She's in a lighter rig. Mine's heavy enough that I wouldn't have tried that road without four wheel drive.

Perhaps three nights here, then we'll choose a new adventure. There are so many interesting places around here. It mainly depends on weather.

But honestly, I could stay in this spot for weeks. Maybe we will.
